Hey There!
My name is Caroline Nessel, and I’m currently in my third year of pursuing a Bachelor of Interior Design degree at Vancouver Island University, with a specific interest in residential design.
I have a passion for biophilic design, blending various styles, and crafting unique spaces that reflect user personality. Through my work, I strive to create environments that not only look beautiful but also serve functional purpose, foster a connection to nature and enhance the well-being of those who use them.
All About Me
Design is more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating experiences, shaping environments, and enhancing the way people feel in a space. As an interior design student, I'm passionate about purpose-driven design—creating spaces that are deeply functional, inclusive, and satisfy the needs of end users. I believe that the environments we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on how we feel, interact, and thrive.
Why Interior Design?
For a long time, I thought I wanted to be an architect—I was fascinated by the structure of buildings, the technical precision, and the art of bringing spaces to life. I learned AutoCAD at a young age and quickly became intrigued by floor plans and the behind-the-scenes aspects of design. The more I explored, the more I realized that interior design was more aligned with the design path I was driven to as it wasn’t just about shaping a building—it was about shaping experiences. The ability to design the entire scope of a project, from atmosphere to structure, drew me in completely. I fell in love with the way interior design blends creativity, functionality, and human connection, making spaces not only look good but feel intuitive and meaningful.
My Journey
I was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but after moving to Vancouver Island, I knew I had found the environment where I truly thrive. Being surrounded by nature—hiking through forests, swimming in oceans, lakes and rivers, and camping under the stars—has deeply influenced my design philosophy. I strive to bring that same sense of calm, connection, and intention into the spaces I create.
Through my studies, I’ve had the opportunity to work on diverse projects, from designing a cultural arts center for neurodiverse individuals to creating a wellness resort inspired by the natural beauty of Strathcona Provincial Park. Each project reflects my belief that spaces should serve a purpose, foster inclusivity, and feel intuitively designed.
Beyond Design
When I’m not working on a project, you can find me exploring the outdoors, painting, or working on a creative project. I love discovering new ways to express creativity, whether it’s through art, hands-on crafts, or experimenting with different design techniques.
This portfolio is a glimpse into my evolving journey as a designer.
Feel free to explore my work, and if you’d like to connect, I’d love to hear from you!
